According to the Philippines Mines and Geosciences Bureau, of the total 44 operating metallic mines in the country, 27 are of nickel. Other metals account for the remainder which includes gold, silver, copper and chromite. Nickel is mainly mined in the Palawan and Zambales provinces, with notable activities in the provinces of Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte and the Dinagat Islands. The Philippines had 3.1Mt of nickel reserves as of January 2015, accounting for approximately 3.8% of the global total. Nickel deposits in the country are predominantly associated with laterite ores (limonite being a member of the laterite family), but are also found in dunite, pyroxenite and gabbroic rocks as stated by the Philippines’ Mines and Geosciences Bureau.
